Volunteering at Dorchester

Hello! My name is Neesa Sunar, and I am a volunteer at Dorchester Senior Citizens Center. My mother, JoAnne Biswakarma, is the director of the center, so I come here a lot during my free time to help out. I do a bunch of things while I'm here: putting together furnture, hooking up computers, occasional go-foring. I enjoy the freedom I have as a volunteer. I can help out by doing filing, but I can also exercise my leadership skills and form a class. Currently, I lead our choral group, the Singing Swingers (pictured at left, I'm at the piano!).

Many of the members of the Singing Swingers are blind or visually impared. This is one of the activities we have at Dorchester that is part of our affiliation with Visions, an organization that provides services to visually impared seniors. It's really nice to see the blind and those who see alike get along fabuluously and sing songs. The group gets incredibly lively! Pictured above is the time we performed at Thanksgiving Dinner! The singers dressed up in matching Yellow T-shirts, and we sang three songs: "You are my Sunshine," "Singin' In The Rain," and a final Thanksgiving prayer, "Let There Be Peace On Earth." We were lucky enough to have Nancy Miller from Visions visit us during our dinner too! She is pictured at the far left, sitting at the table. She knew some of the members, and it was nice to see the relationship she had with members of our center.
Our group is now singing songs for the Holiday season. We will be singing at our upcoming Holiday Party, on December 23rd, 2008 at 12:45 PM. Seniors and non-seniors alike are welcome to join us!
